As a TV presenter and stage actor, auditions are crucial and with that comes immense pressure and stress. I had a conversation with a director, once, who was running a long week of auditions and I asked her about the process. She said, “Every Time somebody walks in, I’m hoping they’re THE ONE!” That completely changed the narrative for me. Oftentimes we are so focused on them judging us that we forget that they’re actually on our side.

This is the same thinking for when we are about to present. Maybe there’s a pitch, maybe it’s a type of status report or yearly strategy. Maybe we’re hosting a fun company party or high stakes conference. Whatever it is we are presenting for, we often forget that the audience is on our side. (Most of the time. Sometimes, we are tasked with trying to win over an audience that doesn’t like change. There’s a way to diffuse this quickly to influence action but that’s for another time.)
